We made it! Over the past twelve months, we have continued to help turn the spotlight onto what really matters to the student body, and onto all of the incredible work you’ve been doing.

As a Student Officer team, we have worked on a range of different projects to ensure all students at King’s have the best experience possible, even during such an unprecedented year. From introducing informal learning spaces, getting rid of online assessment issues, and successfully organising One Last Roar, working from home didn’t stop us from achieving some incredible things this year. Here are some of our highlights:

Salma Hussain, President

  • Tackled the mice problem at King’s by creating Mousewatch, with monthly updates featured on the website
  • Increased Financial Support by supporting the review of KCL Bursary provision and King’s Living Bursary
  • Supported inclusivity on campus and online by creating inclusive, alcohol-free events, and in the decision-making of King’s and KCLSU

Niall Berry, VP Activities and Development

  • Established an Accessibility Fund for groups to ensure all students can safely engage with the SU, which will be available from September
  • Created a Sponsorship webpage for all activity groups
  • Co-chaired King’s Edge with KCL to ensure students have easier access and increased awareness of extra-curricular opportunities across this year

Vatsav Soni, VP Education (Arts & Sciences)

  • Hosted “Scrap the Cap” campaign to amend the existing Late Submission Policy
  • Expanded Informal Learning Spaces on campus to support students during revision periods

Ali Gibson, VP Education (Health)

  • Improved representation and student voice across King’s through establishing initiatives like a brand-new student experience committee in the Health faculties
  • Designed various Student Voice Projects and presented them to College Education Committee

Heena Ramchandani, VP Postgraduate

  • Improved career support and opportunities to PGT students by working with the King’s Career department on a new KEATS Page and PG-specific Careers’ Fair
  • Increased financial feasibility for students at King’s by supporting the establishment of the third installment of tuition fees for self-funded students

Tasnia Yasmin, VP Welfare and Community

  • Followed up on the Bush House incident by drafting the Tavistock report and supporting with actions from the report
  • Took part in and lead many different projects related to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI)
  • Addressed sustainability by working alongside the King’s Climate Action Network Students & Education subgroup on different initiatives across campus

Joint officer team projects:

  • Mediated the student rent strike by working with King’s and the student group KCL Cut the Rent to secure £50,000 for students in the most financial hardship
  • Reinstated Wednesday Afternoons in Semester 2 as protected time so students can continue taking part in activities and sports groups and using the time for other non-academic responsibilities
  • Helped students of faith to be supported in COVID, including supporting religious celebrations in self-isolation and ensuring access to prayer spaces

COVID-19 work:

  • Worked with King’s to subsidise the cost of the Fit to Fly test and release tests for international students over the Winter break
  • Raised many online exams assessment issues, such as Keats outages and exam format
  • Hosted the most extensive ever event series of the year: One Last Roar. Granted over £10,000 to student groups to put on their activities and have had inclusivity at the forefront (including having one non-alcoholic and one alcoholic session for the main event)
