Women’s History Month aims to celebrate and reflect on the role of women in history and society. There are numerous events and exhibitions in London running throughout March and beyond to learn more about the often overlooked stories of women. Part of the London School of Economics, this library was founded in 1926 and is dedicated to the history of the women’s movement in England. It is home to more than 60,000 books and documents as well as extensive online archives. Its primary focus is on documenting women’s history in public and political life from the 19th century to present. The library is free to visit, and anyone can become a member.
Women of London is an organisation which holds walking tours around different areas of London, highlighting the achievements and stories of women across the city. For Women’s History Month this year they will be holding walking tours in areas such as Westminster, Bloomsbury, and the East End.
This pop-up museum aims to document and celebrate the lives of women in East London. It holds exhibitions, workshops, events, and other initiatives to bring light to stories that are rarely told. Their website has a range of resources on historic women from East London, as well as opportunities to get involved. They are currently setting up a permanent home in Barking which is due to open this year.
The Brady Arts Centre in Whitechapel is hosting a free exhibition for Women’s History Month this year which celebrates the art of women photographers. The exhibition includes portraits of women at work and play by a number of different artists dating back to the 1970s. This exhibition at Four Corners in Bethnal Green highlights the role of women in protests in the United Kingdom from 1968 to present. It challenges traditional narratives of male-dominated protests and shows the impact of women in resistance spanning generations. The exhibition is running from the 18th of March to 30th of April, and the space will also be hosting talks on feminism, photography, and resistance.
